Egypt’s State Security Prosecution releases 15 detained politicians

Egypt’s State Security Prosecution released 15 detained politicians, including writer and professor of political science at Cairo University Hassan Nafaa, political activists Hazem Abdel-Azim and Shady El-Ghazaly Harb on Thursday.

The released detainees were accused of spreading false news and joining a banned group.

Nafaa was detained after he posted a tweet criticizing President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi’s regime in September 2019.

Former Presidential campaigner and then turned critic Hazem Abdel-Azim has been brought before the state’s security prosecution for accusations of belonging to an outlawed group and disseminating fake news in May 2018.
