Egypt’s General Intelligence head visits South Sudan, meets with President

On Wednesday morning the head of Egypt’s General Intelligence, Abbas Kamel, made a quick visit to South Sudan where he met with President of South Sudan Silva Kiir.

He conveyed a message from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Kiir, and also met with his Sudanese counterpart to enhance security relations between the two close-knit countries.

Kiir previously visited Cairo for three days in January and met with Sisi at the Ettihadeya Presidential Palace.

Salva Kiir’s visit to Cairo aimed at developing relations between the two African countries and inform the Egyptian president on how the peace agreement signed between conflicting parties in South Sudan was going, according to a statement issued in January by Salva Kiir’s spokesperson.

During the visit, Kiir also met with Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Sisi met Salva Kiir on the sidelines of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation FOCAC 2018, which was held in Beijing in September 2018.

According to a statement issued by Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry at the time, the leaders had discussed developing cooperation between both countries, as well as South Sudan’s recent political and security developments.

Shoukry reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the political road map drawn up in South Sudan, adding that Egypt would provide support to the formulated political agreement.
