Leak: Sisi warns of army involvement in politics

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has warned of the army’s involvement in politics, recalling the Algerian experience which led to the death of thousands, the New Khaleej reported yesterday.

According to the news website, Al-Jazeera Mubasher broadcast a recording of Al-Sisi, which dates back to 5 December 2012, during the clashes which took place between supporters and opponents of the country’s first freely elected Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

“There are a lot of examples in Libya, Yemen, Syria and I want to speak with you about Algeria,” Al-Sisi was heard saying in the recording.

“In 1990 and 1991, when the Islamic Salvation Front won an overwhelming majority, the army interfered and that resulted in not less than 100,000 deaths until today,” he added.

Months later, Al-Sisi carried out a bloody coup against Morsi’s government and has allowed the army to take control of most state institutions.
