Egypt Stresses Success in Curbing Illegal Immigration

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said on Sunday that it had achieved a remarkable success in the fight against illegal immigration and human trafficking, within the framework of the country’s strategy to curb this phenomenon.

Major General Mohamed Awad, Director of the Department of Combating Illegal Immigration and Human Trafficking, said that the ministry has achieved unprecedented security successes.

He noted that Egypt’s “geographical location makes it prone to three types of illegal migration, from the inside to the outside, especially to the shores of southern Europe, from abroad towards the country, especially from East Asian countries, or a transit station for the access of people from neighboring countries to southern or eastern Europe.”

Awad was speaking during the first conference on combating illegal immigration and human trafficking, which kicked off on Sunday under the auspices of Egypt’s Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq.

For his part, Assistant Interior Minister and Head of the Drug and Organized Crime Combat Sector General Mohamed Barakat, said that the phenomenon of human trafficking and illegal immigration was one of the most important issues that the ministry was addressing due to its dangerous and negative impact on the society.

In the same context, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met on Sunday with the president of the European Union Council Donald Tusk and the Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

The officials reviewed Egypt’s efforts in combating illegal immigration and securing its land and sea borders amid instability in neighboring countries, the presidency added.
