75 corruption cases in Egypt during May: PFT

Partners for Transparency (PFT) tracked the number of corruption cases in Egypt during May, the group found 75 corruption cases, according to PFT report.

Most of the corruption cases took place in Cairo, counting 22 incidents, while the Giza governorate witnessed 13 incidents, followed by 10 incidents in Qaliubiya and 8 in Alexandria.

The PFT further stated that the highest number of corruption incidents took place in localities, counting 15 incidents, followed by 13 in the Ministry of Supply, 11 in the Ministry of Health, 5 in the Ministry of Education, 4 in the Ministry of interior, and 3 in each of the ministries of housing and endowment.

Incidences of corruption have increased since last month, as in April the PFT indicated 68 incidents.

Different state institutions took measures towards these incidents, as members of parliament (MPs) issued several requests for information related to corruption and waste of public money cases; however, no legislations were drafted.

Meanwhile, judicial authorities investigated in May 48 corruption cases, while 15 were under trial and 7 were adjudicated.

The Administrative Control Authority (ACA) also signed a cooperation protocol with the World Bank regarding enhancing governance.

The ACA initiated recently a media campaign through televised advertisements to spread awareness against corruption.

In a similar context, a committee was assigned to retrieve state land, following President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s call for the police and military to end illegal land acquisition. Al-Sisi further criticised the performance of the government, urging it to improve and forcefully settle the legal status of land seized by force.

A total number of 968 corruption incidents took place in Egypt in 2016, according to the PFT.

The report is the 23rd to be published by the organisation, which tracks corruption cases in governmental institutions through circulated information in different media outlets.
